The case, Gratz v. Bollinger, reached the Supreme Court. The admissions process was held to be unconstitutional because it was not narrowly tailored enough to not violate the Equal Protection clause of the 14th Amendment of the United State Constitution.<\/p>\n<p>You need 100 points to be admitted.<\/p>\n<p>Academic factors (100 points):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>80 \u2013 High school GPA<\/li>\n<li>12 \u2013 ACT or SAT score<\/li>\n<li>10 \u2013 Quality of high school<\/li>\n<li>8 \u2013 Strength of high school curriculum<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Non-academic factors (40 points):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>10 \u2013 In-state resident<\/li>\n<li>4 \u2013 Alumni relationships<\/li>\n<li>1 \u2013 Outstanding essay<\/li>\n<li>5 \u2013 Personal achievement<\/li>\n<li>20 \u2013 Other, including<\/li>\n<ul>\n<li>Socioeconomic disadvantage<\/li>\n<li>Underrepresented minority<\/li>\n<li>Athletic recruitment<\/li>\n<li>Provost\u2019s discretion<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Looking back, I spent way too much time on my essay. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In 2003, three years after I had been admitted to the University of Michigan, the constitutionality of the points based admissions process was challenged.
