  • My First Father’s Day

    fathersday2013

Each year, I get dad out for nine holes of golf early on the morning of Father’s Day. This year was special in that it was my first father’s day, dad’s first father’s day as a grandfather, and we had Harvey with us. Harvey was a good sport and made it all the way around in the cart while we played an enjoyable nine holes of golf.

Afterwards, we met up with Mom, Katy, and Taylor at Apache Trout Grill for an excellent brunch.

Because the “Rogers Father’s Day” was a week early due to mom and dad’s retirement trip to Disney World, I celebrated “Jonkhoff’s Father’s Day” the next weekend, as well. We had a great brunch at the Country Club and then headed out for some golf.

  • Bushwacking

    Bushwacking June 2013

I spent several hours earlier this summer clearing saplings and other overgrowth from the southeastern portion of our lot, which is located closed to East Shore Road. The area is low-lying and has been taken over by poison ivy. I can only imagine that it was once a nice looking portion of the property, but had become a dense unused space.

I started with a handheld saw and pruning shears. A bug-bite that sent me to the doctor, three bouts with poison ivy, and an achy back later, I’ve made some headway. It is much thinner from the side as you drive into and out of the Double Dogleg. However, I still need to improve the view from the living room down to the lake. That will take some additional work – and perhaps a crew to eliminate some of the larger, dead trees.

The next step is to either remove or chip the felled trees.

  • The Due Date Wait . . . and Wait . . . and Wait

To pass the time while we wait for Harvey to decide it’s time to get the show on the road, Lindsey and I spent the weekend drywalling the garage ceiling and organizing for summer.

Everything we do now is a “could be the last ____” before Harvey arrives! We’ve had a great last supper with Mom, Dad, Katy, and Taylor at Copper Falls, and then enjoyed watching Michigan defeat Syracuse in the Final Four to advance to the National Championship game for men’s college basketball. This morning, after our last church as just a couple, we had a tasty last brunch with Peg and Dan at Patisserie Amie. Of course, it could be another week of “lasts.”

Looking ahead in non-baby news, tomorrow is the first day of Masters week – our favorite golf tournament of the year. We can never get enough of the lush green grass, limited commercial coverage, and Sunday afternoon back-nine shootout.

Have a wonderfully exciting week, and be sure to watch some golf!

  • Warm and Foggy Weekend

We went to our first PathFUNDER tonight with Christopher Walter and Christy. The theme of the event was “an evening in the woods,” and it was executed wonderfully. There were birch tree artifacts everywhere, and, with permission, Lindsey absconded with a centerpiece! It was great to see former teachers and other familiar faces.

Church was interesting this morning. The children’s message was about maintaining balance in life. And the sermon reiterated that notion, and gave us the following acronym as a means of checking our balance.

SWEEPP. Sleep. Work. Eating. Exercise. Play. Prayer. If we are conscious of maintaining balance within and among those areas in life, then we should be doing okay!

After lunch at the Town Plaza with Dan and Peg, we went up to their house to meet Christy and pick up the baby stroller. Here’s a pick of us learning how to push it!

  • Pot Pie and Cards

Lindsey made an excellent chicken pot pie, one of our favorite dishes lately. Dinner was followed by brownies, coffee, and a rousing game of Liverpool Rummy with our guest of honor, Grandma Rogers. We even arranged for Yogi to keep her feet warm!
